Our brain like a gigantic road network

Updated: Aug 12

Road Network with bridges. There are cars.
Road Network

You can imagine our brain as a huge network of roads. We drive on many of these roads, but there are always roads we have never driven before and are unfamiliar with. When we were young, we were always exploring new roads. We did a lot of driving on the highways because it was quick and easy. We also crossed the forest, took small paths and crossed bridges. It was exciting to see so many roads ahead of us and we were allowed to take them all.

At some point, maybe at school or even before, we were told that it was dangerous to walk in the forest. There were a lot of dead ends on the country roads and we should have driven much slower on the highways. We are often hindered in our learning by well-meaning advice. This is why we have become accustomed to always walking or driving on the same streets. So nothing could happen to us. We were also afraid of driving on new roads. We didn't know where they were going. Or we were afraid of getting lost and not being able to return to our old habits. We have forgotten what it was like to discover the pathways in our brain. We have forgotten what it was like to continually rediscover the streets of our brain. We can discover and see everything in our brain. But we no longer trust each other. We know what we know and that is enough for us. We no longer see the wealth of knowledge.

In every moment of our lives, we can and must continue to learn. We can and must also use means that we do not know. Otherwise, streets and paths risk being invaded by grass. The path to more knowledge remains hidden from us. Sooner or later we can even get sick.

What can we do to overcome our fear? How can we conclude that the streets of our brain are safe for us? What can we do to awaken in us the desire to learn again, to move forward again, to discover new things again?

Sometimes you have to play gardener. We must first remove grass and weeds from the streets. We can achieve this by changing our habits a little each day. If we used to brush our teeth with the right hand, we now use the left hand for this. We can wear our hair differently. We can go up and down the stairs backwards. You can give a euro to a tramp (if you've never done it before). You can shout loudly at home or simply sing while walking. Everything we do differently every day helps us clear the streets before us so we can walk or drive them and discover new paths.

How does this help? By abandoning our habits, new paths open up in our lives. In fact, we open ourselves to new things. We want to learn something different. In time, we will see things we haven't seen before. We will feel and hear things that we didn't think were true before. But it was all there before. We want to ride on roads we've never been on before.

By making small changes in our daily lives, we can see the world again as we saw it when we were a little child. We become more curious and less afraid. This is how we learn to study.
