As you know, I am training to be a learning methods coach with Jens Voigt in Fürstenwalde near Berlin. I learn so much from him and he always surprises me when he shows me how to motivate a child to learn.
As a swimming teacher, I have seen that children rebel. Then they receive punishments, threats or other sanctions. All of this is actually quite normal, isn't it? The sanctions are supported all the way up to the head teacher. In this way, the children, who most likely also have major problems at school and learning, are kept down. The focus is on discipline, authority and consequences. The psychologist can only help the child to accept this situation.
As a swimming teacher, I have also seen teachers who try to deal with this "rebellion" in a different way. They try to talk to the child and find out what the problem really is. They convey empathy and understanding to the child. They also give punishments and sanctions, but these are accepted by the child because they are fair at that moment. Unfortunately, the actions of these teachers are not always supported by the head teacher or are ignored. So their actions sink into the sand and they become less and less committed to children.
Now it is the opinion of Jens Voigt (who is also a teacher) and also my opinion that such "rebellions" of children can be suppressed in the classroom. The teacher can motivate the children so that they like going to school. This can be achieved by using educational games in school and by teaching different teaching methods . It is important to us that children know how to learn. This makes them autonomous and they don't have to rebel against anything. This raises the social level because everyone knows how to learn to achieve very good results. Almost no one would repeat a year.
This obviously requires a change in thinking, not only on the part of school staff, school management and the Ministry of Education, but also on the part of parents. But it would be great for everyone.
On September 23, 2024, the Learn2Learn online congress starts. It's all about learning, and it's going to last 10 days. Since there's a lot of information coming our way, Jens thought about preparing people for it. We all know that our brains block when we absorb too much knowledge and then we don't want to hear about it anymore. To counteract this, Jens has created an online hotel.
